João Palhinha is set to return to Benfica, with the midfielder due in Lisbon on Saturday to sign his contract.

Record reports that the 31-year-old has agreed his exit from Bayern Munich and is expected to land in the Portuguese capital today as the transfer reaches its decisive stage. Two days ago, Fabrizio Romano signalled the move, with Benfica to pay 14 million euros fixed, plus up to five million in add-ons.

The agreement would conclude a long-running saga, Benfica holding firm interest despite overseas competition and Bayern’s initial stance to recover a significant part of their investment.

Palhinha joined Bayern Munich in 2024 after spells at Fulham and Sporting, then spent last season on loan at Tottenham. He made 45 appearances, scoring seven goals and providing two assists.

The player’s preference appears to have influenced the outcome and seems to have helped fend off Premier League interest. He is increasingly close to pulling on the red shirt again.
