More than 12 hours after Benfica’s match with Real Madrid, UEFA has issued its first update, saying in a statement that it is analysing referee François Letexier’s reports following the incident involving Gianluca Prestianni and Vinicius Jr and promising further updates soon.

The governing body has received all records from the Champions League play-off first leg at Estádio da Luz on Tuesday, 17 February, and is reviewing the games played last night.

If anything is flagged in those reports, the relevant investigations will be opened, and any disciplinary sanctions would be announced on UEFA’s website. There is no further information or comment at present.

In the case of Benfica v Real Madrid, it is all but certain that an investigation will be opened into the accusation of racism against Prestianni. Should evidence substantiate the behaviour alleged, the player could face a severe sanction.

This season for Benfica, Prestianni, valued at €12 million, has played 30 competitive games, 18 in Liga Portugal Betclic, seven in the Champions League, two in the Taça de Portugal, two in the Taça da Liga and one in the Supertaça. Across 1,460 minutes, the winger has two goals and one assist.
