Gabriel Índio has said goodbye to Athletic Club as he prepares to join Benfica, with the 17-year-old centre-back already training under Marco Silva with FIFA approval.
According to Glorioso 1904, he is expected to be presented on 26 July, his 18th birthday, when he can sign a long-term deal.
In a social media message, he expressed gratitude to the club that gave him his first professional opportunity and helped fulfil a childhood dream. He also thanked everyone who supported him at Athletic MG and said he would remain a fan of the Esquadrão wherever he is.
Benfica’s early start to pre-season owing to Europa League qualifying has accelerated the process, and the move fits the club’s strategy of targeting high-potential youth.
Índio is regarded as one of Brazil’s most promising young centre-backs and will begin life at the Luz aiming to meet the expectations set by a structure led by Rui Costa.
