It was always going to be a summer of change at Lille OSC. However, there could be even more departures than initially thought. Benjamin André (34), the club captain, has now opened the door to a potential summer exit.
Many players have run down their contracts at Lille. Jonathan David will be the most high-profile departure, but the likes of Angel Gomes, Rémy Cabella, and Samuel Umtiti will also leave on free transfers. Edon Zhegrova, who wanted to leave LOSC last summer before being convinced to stay, will also be allowed to leave the club this time around.
There is also the question of the managerial situation. As reported by L’Équipe on Saturday night, Bruno Genesio could leave the club amid frustration with the internal workings of the club and the management of contract situations.
André’s contract situation is also a topic. His current deal expires at the end of next season, however, he could yet depart this summer, too. “Of course, we’ll sit down and talk, because there is the age, the risk of being at the end of a cycle at a moment in time. Lots of players who have been here for a while are leaving, it feels like a page is turning. We’ll sit down and see what both parties want to do,” began André, the subject of interest from Qatar last summer.
During his mixed zone interview, he added, “I want to play, to have fun. I train as if I were 20 years old and I will always do that, no matter what happens.”
