Benoît Tavenot now holds the longest winless run by a Ligue 1 or Ligue 2 coach this century, underlining the solitude managers feel when results turn.

According to L'Équipe, his last victory came with Bastia on 10 May 2025, a 2-1 over Caen, and he is now 24 without a win. The sequence spans Bastia, seven defeats and four draws before his October exit, and Metz, nine defeats and four draws at the bottom.

Before Metz-PFC finished 1-3 on 19 April, he admitted he was living this stretch very badly. He then passed the 23 set by Faruk Hadzibegic with Arles-Avignon in 2010-2011, who says the job demands passion and that Tavenot is doing all he can.

Tavenot arrived in January to replace Stéphane Le Mignan and says he is running on empty. Denis Renaud, winless in 21 between Paris FC and Niort in 2015-2016, says the turmoil crushes coaches and leaves them feeling alone.

Mecha Bazdarevic, 20 without a win at Grenoble in 2009, recalls owners warning of possible bankruptcy and says he clung to slim positives, even praying. At Metz, president Bernard Serin and sporting director Frédéric Arpinon have backed Tavenot.

Mental coach Raphaël Pesenti warns against rushing into a new job without a psychological reset. With Metz close to relegation a year after promotion, three games remain, Monaco, Lorient and Nice, to end the wait. Tavenot has said he does not know how he will recover and is expected to leave at the end of June.
