Bergson handed first Malaysia call-up for Asean Fifa Cup | OneFootball

Bergson, 35, has been called up by Malaysia for the next Fifa window after recently becoming a naturalised citizen. The Asean Fifa Cup will be staged in Jakarta and Bandung, Indonesia, from 25 September to 5 October.

According to Globo.com, interim head coach Tan Cheng Hoe has included the Johor FC striker in a 23-man squad announced on Thursday. Indonesia, Singapore, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines and Pakistan will also take part.

Bergson has spent seven seasons at Johor FC. Last year he became the league’s all-time top scorer. This season he has six goals in six matches plus two assists, and 208 goals for the club overall.

He has won five Malaysian league titles and four Malaysia Cups among multiple honours. Initially on loan from Fortaleza, he joined permanently in May 2021 for US$ 400,000, about R$ 2.2 million at the time.

Born in Alegrete on Rio Grande do Sul’s western border, he came through Grêmio and featured in their 2010 Campeonato Gaúcho triumph. Subsequent spells included Vila Nova, Ypiranga, Braga in Portugal, Juventude, Portuguesa and Chapecoense.

He also played for Busan Ipark in Japan, Náutico, Paysandu, Athletico, Ceará and Fortaleza. His honours include the 2018 Copa Sudamericana and the 2019 Campeonato Paranaense with Athletico, the 2017 Campeonato Paraense with Paysandu, and the 2020 Copa do Nordeste with Ceará.
