Marseille’s Europa League campaign began with a 4-1 defeat at Beşiktaş, extending Bruno Génésio’s side’s losing run to four in all competitions.
Marseille sat deeper than in Ligue 1, looking to counter, according to GetFootballNewsFrance.com. The hosts struck on 15 minutes when Derek Cornelius stepped towards Junior Olaitan, allowing İlhan Fakılı to run in behind and beat Jeffrey de Lange.
On 29 minutes Himad Abdelli lifted a pass over the defence for academy graduate Keyliane Abdallah, who finished at the near post. Before the break de Lange denied Orkun Kökçü with a sharp stop.
After half-time Marseille saw more of the ball and pressed higher, but Beşiktaş exploited the space. Václav Černý drove a shot in off the post to restore the lead.
Soon after, former Marseille full-back Amir Murillo was left free at a corner to head in a third. Substitute Ernest Poku later burst down the left to add a fourth, his first for the club, as gaps appeared.
Abdallah was Marseille’s standout, rated 7. CJ Egan-Riley and Derek Cornelius received 3, while Abdelli’s assist lifted him to 4. For Beşiktaş, Junior Olaitan earned 8, with Murillo and Černý given 7.
By the end the hosts repeatedly threatened as Marseille chased a consolation. Next up, Paris Saint-Germain.
