Gunners make statement of intent with signing coup as excitement builds for future
Mikel Arteta believes deals for Edwin and Holger Quintero show how Arsenal want to sign the best young talent in the world.
On Thursday, the Gunners confirmed an agreement to sign the teenage duo from Ecuadorian side Independiente del Valle.
The 16-year-olds will both head to north London in August 2027 after turning 18. Until then, Arsenal will be collaborating closely with their current club on their development.
The twins are viewed as two of the brightest prospects in South American football and their signings are considered a real coup for the Premier League leaders.
“Well, there is certainly something that I think is very positive,” said Arteta. “I mean, we can recruit the best talent that is out there.
“Obviously the rules and the limitation that the league provides in relation to using them before a certain age, it is a challenge.
“But we saw that as a good opportunity for us and if we are ahead, I think that’s something very positive.
“For me, the first intention obviously has to be to develop our own players in-house, but that doesn’t mean that you have to close any doors for any talent that we have. That goes for players and it goes as well to staff I think.”
The Quintero twins have represented Ecuador at under-17 level. Edwin is a right winger who is left-footed and likes to cut inside. He has caught the eye with his pace and dribbling ability.
Holger, meanwhile, is right-footed and plays as a central midfielder. He is technically gifted and an impressive passer.
Independiente del Valle have a growing reputation for producing top talent. Arsenal defender Piero Hincapie came through their ranks, as did Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo.
