Betano, Flamengo’s main sponsor, has addressed talk of a possible betting ban in Brazil that could hit the club’s finances.
"A Betano monitora com muita preocupação a discussão atual no país e tomará decisões no momento apropriado", the company told Lance!.
Flamengo’s deal with Betano, signed last year, guarantees R$ 268 million per season and runs initially to the end of 2028, the biggest sponsorship in Brazilian football.
Betano has, informally, warned the club it could terminate the agreement, though no official notice has been issued. The financial risk for Flamengo is therefore considerable.
Estimates suggest sponsorship income could fall by up to 20% if Betano left and the kit supplier also departed. The club is already sounding out alternatives to replace the main sponsor.
The debate intensified after President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva signalled an end to betting operators. The government is reported to be preparing a provisional measure to curb advertising, including on sports sponsorships, although the final text has not been presented.
Last week leading teams issued a joint manifesto warning Brazilian football could suffer if the measure advances, underlining the game’s financial reliance on betting firms.
Social media reaction was largely hostile, with Bites’ analysis for O Globo indicating most comments were negative across six clubs. For Vasco over 90% rejected the message, Flamengo posts saw 86% rejection, and São Paulo clubs 85%.
