Superdeporte reports that Betis have made Benfica midfielder Enzo Barrenechea one of their top priorities for midfield and see him as a possible successor to Amrabat.
The move has gathered pace after Benfica relaxed some demands over his future, with the club now open to a loan if a specific condition is included. The report also notes that Benfica are seeking João Palhinha for the position. It adds that Betis sporting director Manu Fajardo has admired Barrenechea for about three years and previously tried, without success, to sign him.
That familiarity is fuelling hope at the Seville club amid Benfica’s greater willingness to negotiate. A potential obstacle is Barrenechea’s prominent role in Marco Silva’s midfield at the start of the season.
He may therefore be reluctant to return to Spanish football while he looks to establish himself at the Estádio da Luz. Despite his recent importance, his continued stay at Benfica is not fully assured.
Benfica would consider a loan but want to safeguard his future by insisting on an obligation to buy in any deal. Betis are among the clubs monitoring the Argentina international, who could be put on the market if a proposal meets Benfica’s terms.
