Toulouse will celebrate the 40th anniversary of their UEFA Cup victory over Napoli on Thursday, and a new book revisits the epic night and its Argentine idol. According to L'Équipe, Beto Marcico : un tango toulousain explores the story behind the shock.
On 1 October 1986, Toulouse overturned a 0-1 first-leg loss at San Paolo by winning 1-0 at home, then advancing 4-3 on penalties. That shootout saw Diego Maradona strike the post with his kick against goalkeeper Philippe Bergeroo.
Written by Benjamin Laguerre, who has worked with So Foot and Radio Marca, the book draws on many testimonies to capture a fevered Stadium. It centres on Alberto “Beto” Marcico, the Argentine who arrived a year earlier and swiftly became the Violet faithful’s idol.
Laguerre traces the build-up to Maradona’s missed spot-kick and what followed, from the city’s euphoria to Marcico’s departure six years later for Buenos Aires. Marcico’s attachment to Toulouse has never dimmed, and he speaks candidly about that golden spell.
Published via Amazon KDP, the book is currently available only on Amazon. A large-format edition is planned for bookshops in early 2027 to mark TFC’s 90th anniversary. A companion musical project, Beto de Toulouse, is also on streaming platforms.
