Bidding War Over Bayern Flop? Newcastle Joins the Palhinha Poker Game

In recent days, there have been numerous indications that João Palhinha is set to join Aston Villa. Now, it appears there’s new movement in the transfer saga. With Newcastle United, another Premier League club has entered the race for the midfielder—a development that should please FC Bayern in particular.

João Palhinha’s future remains one of the major transfer topics at Bayern Munich. The Munich club has already made it clear to the 31-year-old that he no longer plays a role in Vincent Kompany’s sporting plans and is free to leave the club this summer.

There is certainly no shortage of interested parties, at least in the Premier League. Most recently, Aston Villa was considered the clear favorite to sign the Portuguese international. Palhinha and the Europa League champions are reportedly already in agreement in principle regarding a transfer.

The problem, however, lies in the negotiations between the clubs.

FC Bayern would like to sell Palhinha outright this time, following his loan spell at Tottenham Hotspur. The Munich club is reportedly hoping for a transfer fee of between 25 and 30 million euros. Aston Villa, on the other hand, apparently prefers a loan deal with an option to buy in the summer of 2027.

Newcastle United could now break the deadlock in this stalemate.

Newcastle has expressed interest in Palhinha

As BILD reporter Heiko Niedderer reports in the “Bayern-Insider” podcast, the Magpies have made their presence known. “Newcastle has now entered the fray and expressed interest in Palhinha. But they’re not in the pole position—that much is clear. Aston Villa still is. They’ve really stepped up their efforts recently,” explains Niedderer.

According to the report, Palhinha’s personal preference has changed little so far. The Portuguese player is said to still favor a move to Birmingham.

“Palhinha would clearly lean toward a move to Aston Villa,” Niedderer emphasized.

One reason for this is likely the competitive prospects. Villa can offer Palhinha Champions League soccer and is looking to strengthen its central midfield. Coach Unai Emery is said to have already made an intensive push to sign the Bayern Munich player.

Newcastle, however, also has a specific need in central midfield. Following Bruno Guimarães’s move to Arsenal, the Magpies are looking for a new midfielder. With his Premier League experience and defensive qualities, Palhinha could fit the profile they’re seeking.

For FC Bayern, the entry of another financially strong Premier League club into the race is good news, regardless of Palhinha’s preference.

Until now, Aston Villa had been in a comfortable negotiating position. The club was aware of Munich’s desire to sell and could simultaneously count on Palhinha himself preferring a move to Birmingham.

With Newcastle now in the mix, there is additional competition. This could increase the pressure on Villa to accommodate Bayern regarding the structure of the deal—and particularly the transfer fee.

A sale would also be important from a financial standpoint. Bayern signed Palhinha from Fulham in 2024 for around 50 million euros. Now, the club hopes to recoup at least part of that investment.
