Nico Schlotterbeck is expected to become one of the hottest defensive prospects in the summer of 2026.

The German international is considered one of the best defenders in the Bundesliga, impressing onlookers with his abilities on the ball and defensive discipline.

However, his future at Borussia Dortmund remains uncertain, with his contract expiring in 2027. Although the player has yet to make a decision, it is likely he will leave at the end of the season.

Real Madrid are among the clubs closely tracking the situation of Schlotterbeck, as the club desperately try to find a long-term replacement for the ageing duo of David Alaba and Antonio Rudiger, both of whom may even leave at the end of the season.

However, a big obstacle for Real Madrid was the interest from Barcelona, and their coach, Hansi Flick, who still retains immense pull over German players.

Real Madrid get a massive relief

However, a recent report from Diario SPORT has indicated that Barcelona have taken the backseat in their quest to sign a defender.

While they are attentive to the Schlotterbeck opportunity, the Blaugrana will only consider a signing if the player is available for free and his economic demands are considered reasonable.

If not, Barcelona are prioritising offensive reinforcements over defensive ones, thus paving the way for Real Madrid swoop in.

A left-footed centre-back with the ability to circulate possession and strong aerial prowess, Schlotterbeck could be an excellent fit at Real Madrid.

That said, signing the German international won’t be easy, as Los Blancos would also have to fend off interest from other clubs across Europe.

Recent reports suggest Schlotterbeck could be a key demand for Jurgen Klopp should the German become the next coach of Real Madrid, thus putting even more pressure on the club to secure the purchase of the Dortmund star.
