Birmingham City will kick off their Championship campaign against Sheffield United, but Blues fans will notice a big change at Bramall Lane

Birmingham City's 2026-27 Championship season will kick off with a trip to Sheffield United on Saturday evening - but their travelling fans have been sent a warning by the club ahead of the clash.

Some Blues fans will have been underwhelmed with a 10th-placed finish in the second tier last season, which came after their 111-point League One haul the year prior, but the building blocks were put in place for what could be a big year coming up.

A tough task awaits on the opening day of the campaign though with a trip to South Yorkshire to take on Chris Wilder's Blades, who are perhaps not at full strength with the departure of Gus Hamer earlier in the week, and the travelling City fans will be hoping to see their side take all three points.

However, on the eve of the match, Birmingham's travelling army of fans - which is over 2,800 after selling out their allocation at Bramall Lane - have been sent a warning by their own club's social media account.

In the BCFC account that is dedicated to supporter updates, supporters have been told to 'plan accordingly' due to the fact that the away stand at Bramall Lane which fans will be housed in is being renovated.

Because of that, there is no roof to shield Blues supporters from the elements, and it's expected to be a sunny, warm evening in Sheffield, with suncream being advised to be applied.

The Bramall Lane Stand, which Birmingham will be housed in, is a two-tiered structure that usually houses Blades supporters in the top, and visiting fans in the bottom.

That won't be happening for the season opener though, as well as several other clashes that are to come.

United announced that in late July that a number of construction projects were happening at their stadium at that time, including work on the aforementioned Bramall Lane Stand (BLS), which is undergoing repainting and strengthening work as well as other stands.

Due to the specific work taking place on the BLS though, which has seen the removal of the roof panels, many Blues fans will be left uncovered for the entirety of the match, meaning they're set to be hit by the South Yorkshire sun.

Of their 46 Championship matches last season, Birmingham won 17, with just five of those coming on the road - travels away from St. Andrew's weren't exactly happy hunting missions for Chris Davies' side.

Just 20 points out of a possible 69 were picked up on the road, and simply put, that will have to improve in 2026-27 if Blues are serious about pushing for promotion back to the Premier League as quickly as possible.

There's certainly enough talent in the Birmingham squad to win games both at home and away from it. Jay Stansfield, Demarai Gray and Carlos Vicente are just a handful of talented forwards that can fire in the goals for Davies this coming season.

Just 18 goals from 23 matches on the road last season though wasn't good enough in the slightest, so City will be looking to better that over the course of 2026-27 - starting with a win over a team in Sheffield United that are not the finished article this summer by any stretch of the imagination.
