Lewis Koumas' season has been extremely mixed for both Hull City and Birmingham City

The transfer activity of both Hull City and Birmingham City throughout the Championship season has generated plenty of headlines for differing reasons.

Blues and the Tigers were, to an extent, also expected to have extremely contrasting campaigns as a result, with Chris Davies' side unafraid to splash the cash in a bid to aid the ambitions showcased by Knighthead Capital Management, whilst the East Yorkshire club were hit with a two-window transfer fee restriction after previous delayed payments.

Despite such events unfolding, it is Hull who sit higher up the Championship standings as the campaign heads towards the run-in, although Birmingham have certainly bolstered their chances of making the play-offs after backing up an extremely active second transfer window of the season with a largely positive run of results at the beginning of 2026.

As previously mentioned, the fact that City received such a sanction by the EFL has limited the business which Sergej Jakirovic has been able to conduct throughout his first season in charge at the MKM Stadium amid a lengthy list of injury issues throughout the year.

In the summer, one player who emerged as a target for the Tigers was Liverpool youngster, Lewis Koumas, who had previously endured a mixed period on loan with Stoke City last season after initially making a minor breakthrough into the first-team fold at Anfield.

However, after being beaten to his signature by Blues, the promotion-chasing East Yorkshire club are now becoming the beneficiaries of a key transfer decision made in January by the West Midlands outfit, according to Football League World's Hull City fan pundit, Cameron Gibson.

Birmingham City 'regret' claim issued as Liam Delap comparison made on Lewis Koumas' Hull City spell

Indeed, Koumas proved a divisive figure during his short spell at St. Andrew's @ Knighthead Park, scoring just once in 25 appearances across all competitions, which came in a 3-2 win against league leaders, Coventry City, on January 4th.

It was widely reported that the 9-cap Welsh international was set to see his loan terminated, with Birmingham subsequently adding six new players to their squad in the winter window, which included loan moves for Jhon Solis and Ibrahim Osman, whilst Carlos Vicente signed from Deportivo Alaves.

The 20-year-old has since made an impression of sorts in HU3 with two goals in seven games for Hull against Blackburn Rovers and Derby County, and Gibson believes it is the Tigers who will get the best out of the aforementioned transfer developments.

"I do think they will regret making the decision to terminate Koumas' loan," he told FLW.

"He's only 20 years old and has played 72 Championship games. For a 20-year-old, that experience is invaluable.

"He's clearly got natural ability or else he wouldn't be a Liverpool player," claimed Gibson.

"I look back to when we first got Liam Delap, who had been at Stoke and Preston, and hadn't scored many goals in about 50-60 games in those spells, then came to Hull City and was amazingly consistent.

"He's obviously gone to Ipswich and Chelsea and had a really good start to his career. I can see the same thing happening with Koumas," he added.

"He's scored a few goals, played a few games and ended up at Hull. We clearly have the ability to break through these young talents.

"I think Sergej Jakirovic is getting the best out of him. He's had a couple of starts and made an impact off the bench when defences are tired, to stretch them.

Gibson also believes a second loan agreement between Hull and the Merseyside club would be ideal if they weren't to regain their Premier League status.

"I would think if Hull City are in the Championship next season, that Koumas would be a perfect loan," he explained.

"Lets see how he gets on for the final 11-12 games, and who knows. We could be in the Premier League, and maybe he needs another Championship loan.

"He's still developing at 20 years old. He's had the experience, and now with the manager backing him and giving him loads of confidence, he should go from strength-to-strength.

"He's a good player, and you don't have to watch him for that long to realise that. It's just, 'can he consistently keep putting up good numbers?', as that's why Birmingham let him go (in the first place)."

Lewis Koumas will hope to continue growing in confidence at Hull City

At this stage of his career, over 70 appearances in the Championship will be vital to Koumas' long-term development, and he will hope to continue growing in confidence with the Tigers.

It is still perhaps too early to say whether Birmingham are feeling a sense of regret given his well-taken finishes against Rovers and the Rams, as both Osman and Vicente have made positive impacts at St. Andrew's since their own January switches.
