Birmingham City beat Bristol City 2-1 at St Andrew's to rise from 14th to 10th, sealed by first half goals before Tomi Horvat's late penalty set up a nervy finish.

In the eighth minute, Phil Neumann turned in Demarai Gray's set-piece cross to open the scoring.

Gray then struck the left post from a direct free-kick (19.). Jhon Solís doubled the lead with a low finish from the centre of the box (29.).

After the restart, Jay Stansfield was denied by Radek Vítek (51.), and August Priske hit the left post moments later (51.) before steering another chance wide (52.).

City found a lifeline when Tomi Horvat drew a penalty after Stansfield's foul (80.). Horvat converted from the spot (82.).

Six minutes were added and, for The Robins, Ross McCrorie headed narrowly wide in the fifth minute of stoppage time.

Birmingham registered six shots on target from 11 attempts and struck the woodwork twice.
