Blackburn Rovers are reportedly keen on swooping in for experienced central defender Craig Dawson on a free transfer to replace the exit of Dom Hyam to Wrexham.

This is reported by journalist Alan Nixon on his Patreon page, who insists that the Lancashire outfit are keen on utilising the free agent market to bolster the squad ahead of some hectic Championship scheduling.

Rovers have started the season in relatively poor fashion, winning just one of their opening four league games and losing the other three, leaving them 19th in the table.

The momentum will need to be swung if the club are to replicate their play-off push under the Frenchman last year, and some added experience and guile to the backline could be vitally important to limiting the goals going in at the wrong end.

As per journalist Alan Nixon, Blackburn Rovers are keen on bringing experienced defender Craig Dawson to Ewood Park on a free transfer.

Rovers are said to be targeting Dawson due to selling Dom Hyam to Wrexham on deadline day, with options needing to be bolstered so the club can attempt to look up the table rather than over their shoulders.

The 35-year-old Dawson is still a free agent after his contract expired with Wolves at the end of last term, and the defender has since been weighing up offers on the table from different clubs.

In a latest update by Nixon, Blackburn have entered the race. He was reportedly on the radar of Birmingham City, but they elected to recruit Jack Robinson from Sheffield United instead.

Dawson’s spell at Wolves came to a rather sour end, eventually being frozen out by boss Vitor Pereira during the back end of the 2024-25 Premier League campaign.

Craig Dawson would be an excellent addition to Blackburn Rovers

After Dom Hyam’s departure, Blackburn Rovers only have one recognised central defensive option in Sean McLoughlin, and he's now suspended after picking up a red card in their latest defeat at home to Norwich City.

With this in mind, Rovers desperately need cover in that area, otherwise it could be a humiliating afternoon at Watford when fielding a disjointed backline.

Dawson is a figure who would significantly bolster the defensive department. He would also inject valuable experience to fill the void of Hyam’s exit, with over 500 games under his belt during his career – and over 300 of those coming in the English top-flight.

57 appearances in the second-tier also shows that Dawson knows the demands of the division and knows what it takes to be successful after helping West Brom reach the play-offs.

His leadership qualities and effortless ability to read the game is something Rovers desperately need at the back with how short they are on numbers, and the club should be doing all they can to ensure they are well-stocked there ahead of the trip to Vicarage Road.
