Blackburn Rovers are looking to sign Liverpool left-back Luke Chambers on loan for the 2026-27 season

Blackburn Rovers are making a move to try and land Liverpool defender Luke Chambers on loan for the 2026-27 season.

It comes after returning manager Tony Mowbray revealed this week that he had personally flown to Switzerland to meet with the club's owners - the Venky's - in regards to needing more help when it came to the transfer budget.

That plea looks like it may have worked - Rovers have only signed winger Jayden Fevrier this summer from Stockport County, whilst Moussa Baradji's loan deal from Yverdon-Sport was made permanent, but more reinforcements are needed prior to the September 1 deadline.

There looks to be movement being made though off the back of Mowbray's plea to the Venky's, with Alan Nixon now reporting that Rovers are trying to sign Liverpool youngster Luke Chambers on a temporary basis.

Blackburn have had success with loaning in players from Liverpool before, with Harvey Elliott proving to be a big hit at Ewood Park during the 2020-21 season before going on to bigger and better things at Anfield.

And Mowbray is looking towards the Merseyside outfit for another bit of help with a move for Chambers, who is relatively local, having been born in nearby Preston.

The 22-year-old has played four times for the Reds in cup and European competitions in the past, but he's also been out on various loan stints away from the club, including at Kilmarnock, Wigan Athletic, and most recently Charlton Athletic, where he racked up 18 second tier appearances.

Chambers has been on Liverpool's pre-season tour of the USA and has featured under new manager Andoni Iraola whilst their FIFA World Cup contingent get some extra recovery time, featuring at centre-back due to a lack of options there, and he even found the back of the net in a 4-2 loss to Leeds United.

With the Premier League season beginning in just over two weeks' time and players set to come back into action, Chambers may be allowed to head out on loan again, and Blackburn are looking to make a deal happen.

What Luke Chambers news means for Blackburn Rovers' current left-backs

With Mowbray more than likely going to select a back four based on his pre-season team selections, it leaves both Yuri Ribeiro and Harry Pickering sweating over their future, with Dion De Neve perhaps seen as more of a winger rather than an out-and-out left-back.

Mowbray signed Pickering from Crewe Alexandra in 2021, and under his management he featured 32 times in the Championship in his debut year - a season which proved to be the veteran coach's last at Ewood Park until his return earlier this year.

Pickering only appeared 15 times last season, though, for Blackburn under both Valerien Ismael and Michael O'Neill, and that was less than Ribeiro, who played a total of 22 league matches.

The 29-year-old Portuguese defender has been at Rovers since February 2025, but if Chambers is to arrive at the club, then it could spell the end for one of Mowbray's two current options in a bid to free up wages.

Mowbray has inferred the fact that Blackburn's budget is a tight one this summer, but he must be ready for the challenge given he accepted the role of manager at Rovers after four years away.

Therefore, relying on loan deals to help pad out the squad and perhaps bring some more ability to the pitch - especially given the club's struggles in the Championship last season - cannot be turned down, and Chambers fits the bill as someone with Championship experience in a position that could do with freshening up.
