After the woeful Coppa Italia elimination, Lazio will be eyeing a more positive start to their Serie A campaign when they travel to Bologna this weekend.
The Serie A clash between Bologna and Lazio kicks off at 18:30 local time on Monday, August 24, at the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara.

Over the last three years, Bologna reached new heights under Thiago Motta, who secured a historic Champions League qualification in 2024, and Vincenzo Italiano, who guided them towards a Coppa Italia triumph in 2025. Therefore, Domenico Tedesco has a big responsibility on his shoulders, as he must keep the club on the right track in his maiden Serie A experience.
However, the Rossoblu had a shaky pre-season under their new Italo-German manager. They suffered defeats to Arminia Bielefeld (0-4), Pisa (0-4), and Brighton (0-1), while their two wins came against relatively unsung opponents in Iraklis (1-0) and Cambuur (2-0).
Bologna have also made significant changes to their squad, parting ways with key players, particularly Santiago Castro (Roma), Jhon Lucumi (Juventus), and Remo Freuler (Olympiakos), but they brought in fresh names like Artem Dovbyk, Roberto Piccoli, and Mikel Amondarain.
This pre-season, Lazio enjoyed a perfect record under the tutelage of their new manager, Gennaro Gattuso, winning all six of their friendlies. However, these fixtures were played against opposition from the lower tiers of Italian football, with the exception of new Serie A boys Frosinone.
But when the real action began, the Biancocelesti were stunned by Serie B side Mantova, who eliminated them from the Coppa Italia with a 2-0 win at the Stadio Olimpico last weekend. Therefore, a defeat on the opening day of the league would add another dagger to an already-wounded club.
Gattuso could give new signing Frattesi his full Lazio debut, while Danilho Doekhi and Alfonso Pedraza should get their first taste of the Italian top flight.
Bologna (4-3-3): Skorupski; Zortea, Vitik, Heggem, Miranda; Bernardeschi, Moro, Ferguson; Orsolini, Dovbyk, Rowe.
Lazio (4-3-3): Mandas; Marusic, Doekhi, Provstgaard, Pedraza; Frattesi, Rovella, Taylor; Noslin, Dia, Zaccagni.
After the embarrassing result against Mantova, the Lazio players earned themselves a dressing-down from the management, so a reaction is expected at the Dall’Ara. But Oliver Provstgaard and Danilho Doekhi have yet to flourish as a defensive partnership, while the club’s attacking woes have been well documented. Therefore, an Aquile victory on the road remains easier said than done.
Nevertheless, Bologna are starting the campaign with a new coach who isn’t too familiar with Serie A (despite his Italian roots), in addition to new players who have big shoes to fill. Hence, both sides might be content with a draw based on the circumstances.
