The final home game of the season for Bordeaux against Rodez left people in shock as an altercation between a supporter and a player unfolded on the pitch.
For Bordeaux, who currently sit in third place, the match was crucial in their bid for promotion to Ligue 1.
Their hopes were dealt a severe blow when Rodez capitalised on defensive errors, taking a 1-0 lead courtesy of Lucas Buades’ clinical half-volley between the legs of Bordeaux goalkeeper Gaetan Poussin.
However, the jubilation quickly turned to horror when a Bordeaux supporter stormed onto the field. He physically confronted Buades, causing him to collapse.
The Rodez striker had to be stretchered off and is in hospital.
The game stopped immediately as both teams went to the dressing rooms. The interruption lasted for approximately 40 minutes.
Referee Nicolas Rainville later addressed the media in a press conference, revealing that the match would not resume.
Buades had suffered a concussion from the altercation, raising concerns about player safety.
The repercussions of this incident remain unclear, with discussions underway to determine if they will play the game again.
However, given the severity of the situation, Bordeaux may face additional consequences beyond the loss of the match.
The incident has cast a shadow over the club’s season. It will tarnish their reputation and raise more questions about security measures at football matches.
As the football world processes this shocking incident, it serves as a stark reminder of the need for increased vigilance and measures to ensure the safety of players and supporters alike.
Bordeaux must now navigate the aftermath of this unfortunate event, both on and off the field, as they reflect on what could have been a crucial moment in their promotion campaign.
