Borussia Dortmund’s 3-2 Champions League win over Villarreal on Tuesday was overshadowed by the first-half collapse of new signing Konstantinos Karetsas, who was carried off on a stretcher.
According to BuLi News, the club initially said the Greek youngster was withdrawn due to circulatory problems, before senior staff outlined the situation after the match.
Managing director for sport Lars Ricken said the issue appeared out of the blue with no prior indication anything was wrong, adding he was quite shocked by what happened.
Sporting director Ole Book, who accompanied Karetsas off, said the player was barely able to speak at the time. He added the incident happened very suddenly, and that the player sat down before being taken to hospital for further examinations, where he remained.
Head coach Niko Kovac said he relayed to the squad that everything was okay to ease concern within the group. Ricken praised how the players coped with the shock, noting it is not easy when a team-mate is carried off and the extent of the problem is unclear, a tension also felt among supporters.
