In a surprise decision, Borussia Dortmund have left captain Emre Can out of their Champions League league phase squad as he continues his recovery from a torn ACL.

According to BuLi News, Dortmund have submitted their list to UEFA for the league phase, with Can omitted while still recovering from the torn ACL he suffered in the spring.

It had been thought he could feature later in the first half of the season, but the club apparently do not view that as realistic.

New signings Giannis Konstantelias and Jefferson Lerma were also left out. Konstantelias suffered a torn ACL last week, while head coach Niko Kovac said patience is needed with Lerma as he settles following his move from Ecuadorian side Independiente. “He still needs time, and that’s completely normal,” Kovac said.

Beyond the official list, Dortmund have registered several youngsters on UEFA’s B list: Mathis Albert, Samuele Inacio, Luca Reggiani, Miguel Adje and Jan Luca Riedl.
