Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich open their season on Saturday with the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup at Signal Iduna Park, the first head to head since 2021. Bayern are the holders.

Their last Supercup meeting, played with Covid limits on crowds, ended 3-1 to Julian Nagelsmann’s side as Robert Lewandowski struck twice on his former ground.

Since Vincent Kompany’s arrival, Dortmund have not beaten Bayern in this fixture, the league meetings were level in his first season before a double for the champions. Bayern ended pre-season well despite Jamal Musiala’s health scare, while Niko Kovac’s side beat Arsenal then drew with Roma.

New signings Giannis Konstantelias and Joey Veerman are not expected to start after arriving this week, though they could debut with Konstantinos Karetsas and Joane Gadou. Nico Schlotterbeck, Emre Can and Carney Chukwuemeka are out, and Maximilian Beier could start at wing-back after a minor injury.

Jamal Musiala could make the squad, his neurological issue is not seen as a further risk. Serge Gnabry and Lennart Karl are building fitness, while João Palhinha and Bryan Zaragoza are not expected to feature and could depart before Saturday evening. Harry Kane, Michael Olise and Dayot Upamecano staked claims to start against Heidenheim, and Ismael Saibari plus Nathanel Brown are ready for debuts.
