1989: Möller Leads BVB to Its First Title

On 25 July, 1989, Dortmund’s soccer team was on cloud nine following its recent cup victory over Werder Bremen (4–1 on 24 June, 1989, at Berlin’s Olympic Stadium). In the Super Cup in Kaiserslautern, the newly crowned champions, Bayern Munich, awaited them.

In front of 16,000 spectators, a spectacular back-and-forth battle unfolded. Munich went into halftime leading 2–1 thanks to goals by Alan McInally (21’) and Roland Grahammer (42’). But BVB came out of the locker room with plenty of pace: Günter Breitzke equalized with his second goal of the match to make it 2–2 (56’), Jürgen Wegmann gave the Black and Yellows their first lead just over an hour into the game (64th minute). Radmilo Mihajlović equalized immediately afterward (66th minute). Then it was Andreas Möller’s moment: In the 88th minute, he capped off the match with a brilliant individual effort, sealing the celebrated 4–3 victory that marked Borussia Dortmund’s first-ever Super Cup win.

No other Super Cup match since 1989 has seen seven goals scored in 90 minutes.

2013: The outstanding Reus and a furious BVB

Twenty-four years later, Borussia Dortmund faced Bayern Munich in the Super Cup for the third time.

Strictly speaking, it was actually the fourth matchup between the two top clubs in this format. However, the 2008 edition—which BVB won 2–1, by the way, and which marked the start of the Jürgen Klopp era in Dortmund—is not recognized by the Bundesliga as an official Super Cup match.

On 27 July, 2013, the match was all the more spectacular: Marco Reus put the Black and Yellows ahead as early as the sixth minute at a sold-out SIGNAL IDUNA PARK. After the break, the action came thick and fast: Arjen Robben equalized (54'), before an own goal by Daniel van Buyten (56') and a goal by Ilkay Gündogan (57') put Dortmund back in front by two goals. Robben pulled one back again (64'), but four minutes before the end, Reus sealed the deal with his second goal. Two months after the lost Champions League final at Wembley, this 4–2 spectacle was at least a little balm for the Black and Yellows’ souls.

2021: Lewandowski scores twice against Haaland, Bellingham, and Co.

The most recent Super Cup matchup between the two teams took place on 17 August, 2021. Once again, the venue was SIGNAL IDUNA PARK, where—despite the coronavirus pandemic—24,742 spectators were allowed in.

The BVB lineup included Manuel Akanji, Jude Bellingham, and Erling Haaland, among others. The match developed into an intense and hard-fought contest. Bayern Munich took the lead shortly before halftime thanks to former Dortmund player Robert Lewandowski (41st minute).

Shortly after the break, Thomas Müller extended the lead to 2–0 (50'). However, BVB refused to give up: Marco Reus cut the deficit to 1–2 in the 64th minute with a spectacular goal, reigniting hope. But ten minutes later, Lewandowski sealed the victory with his second goal.
