Grêmio CEO Alex Leitão sparked controversy on social media after Wednesday’s Brasileirão defeat to Botafogo, labelling the Rio side a “time de picaretas”. The club said in a statement that it will take legal action against him.
The flashpoint followed a stoppage-time equaliser by Carlos Vinicius at Nilton Santos that was ruled out by the semi-automatic offside system. The striker briefly celebrated before the decision, and the image shown did not appear conclusive.
His post described football as cruel, alleged his team were robbed and called the defeat very hard to take.
Grêmio’s vice-president of football, Rafael Lima, addressed the incident after the match in Rio de Janeiro.
The loss leaves Grêmio on 28 points in 16th place, ahead of Vasco in 17th on goal difference. They have now played 27 matches, while their Rio rivals have one game fewer.
