Luís Castro has been sacked by Grêmio on Sunday, a day after the 2-1 defeat to Vasco, direct rivals in the Campeonato Brasileiro relegation fight.

According to Globo.com, the dismissal makes him the 16th managerial casualty of the 2026 Brasileirão. He led the Tricolor in 51 games across nine months, with 19 wins, 15 draws and 17 defeats, a 47% points return.

In the league under his watch, Grêmio failed to win away from home. Across 26 matches they recorded seven wins, seven draws and 12 defeats, equating to a 36% return.

Hired at the end of 2025 to replace Mano Menezes, Castro delivered the Campeonato Gaúcho title in March.

This was his second stint in Brazilian football, after a spell in charge of Botafogo between 2022 and 2023.
