Flamengo technical director José Boto says Éverton Cebolinha has effectively removed himself from the club this season as negotiations with Santos progress.
"Éverton, for some time, took himself out of Flamengo by deciding not to renew, it was the end of his cycle," Boto told ESPN.
The 30-year-old has moved forward in talks with Santos on a deal through to the end of the season, on terms similar to recent signings Arthur and Lima. He will terminate his Flamengo contract, which runs until December.
"On Monday, after the Remo match, he asked to travel to Rio because one or two clubs were interested. He knows the conditions we set if they are Brazilian clubs. We are waiting, we have some information, but we await final contracts to say whether he is going to that club," Boto said.
Cebolinha had been with the Flamengo delegation in Belém but was allowed to return to Rio de Janeiro. He has 12 Brasileirão appearances, the limit to change clubs domestically, and still needs to resolve administrative matters. Asked if Santos met expectations for the deal, Boto replied: "From what I was told, yes".
Santos had pursued Cebolinha since last year but were pessimistic as European and other Brazilian clubs made approaches. The board had effectively thrown in the towel amid rival offers.
