West Ham supporters had to wait until the 59th minute of England’s emphatic 5-0 victory over Latvia to see Jarrod Bowen in action. The three lions were in cruise control when the Irons winger was introduced in the second half but he certainly didn’t cruise through the rest of the game.
The Hammers skipper came on to replace Bukayo Saka and immediately caught the eye. His sharp display included an assist for Ebere Eze’s goal, boosting his World Cup prospects in the process. Whilst I might have my claret & blue tinted specs on, I thought Bowen offered more than Saka in his brief time on the pitch.
Bowen showed his trademark tenacity, winning a 50/50 in midfield before driving forward and calmly waiting for Eze to burst into space. His clever decision-making capped off an impressive cameo.
It wasn’t just the assist that will have pleased England manager Thomas Tuchel. Bowen linked play intelligently, drifted into dangerous positions, and was even trusted with free-kick duties.
Perhaps the biggest compliment is that, in all his appearances under Tuchel, Bowen has looked entirely at home on the international stage.
Competition for attacking places will intensify once Cole Palmer and Noni Madueke return, but Bowen’s adaptability could give him an edge when Tuchel finalises his World Cup squad. For now, the West Ham captain is doing his selection hopes no harm at all — and crucially, Tuchel seems to be a fan.
