A 13-year-old boy has died in Ciudad Rodrigo, in western Spain, after a fountain collapsed during celebrations of Spain’s World Cup final victory in the early hours of Monday.

According to Le Progres, emergency services received multiple calls shortly after 00:30 reporting that the structure had fallen on several people. Another young person was injured.

The local council expressed its sorrow and offered condolences to the boy’s family, also wishing a swift recovery to others who were hurt.

Several spectators were said to have climbed onto the fountain before it gave way under the weight.

Spain’s squad are due to parade through central Madrid and conclude in the evening at Plaza de Cibeles, home to the city hall.
