Brazil bans online betting, Corinthians monitor Esportes da Sorte deal | OneFootball

Brazil’s federal government has announced a ban on online betting and virtual casino games nationwide. New deposits are no longer accepted, and sites remain available only to withdraw balances until 23:59 on 5 October.

The change comes via a provisional measure sent to Congress, which must be approved within 120 days to become law. The president said in a post that betting has harmed families and workers and that he would be pleased to end it.

Websites will be blocked after the withdrawal window. Authorised operators are barred from offering services and advertising, and clubs must remove betting brands from sponsorship assets by the same deadline. Refunds, where blocked, will be intermediated by Caixa.

Corinthians have been notified by Esportes da Sorte, the club’s main sponsor, about the draft measure that would prevent betting sponsorships. The board viewed the notice as routine amid possible legal changes and is monitoring the situation.

Their partnership began in mid-2024 and runs until the end of 2029, worth up to R$ 200 million per year. Approval of the measure would render the agreement unviable for Corinthians and other Brazilian clubs with betting partners.

Last week Corinthians issued a statement opposing the planned ban, warning that a sudden revenue cut could damage club structures, a stance backed by leading clubs and state federations. São Paulo’s city council has also approved at first reading a bill to restrict betting advertising, with a second vote still required.
