Brazilian clubs back phased cut to foreign-player quota from 2027 | OneFootball

Brazil’s Série A and Série B clubs have approved a phased cut to the number of foreign players named for matches from 2027, aimed at giving academy graduates more chances.

According to Globo.com, the current cap of nine per game will drop to eight in 2027, then to five by 2030, after a vote held in Rio de Janeiro on Monday.

The gradual shift seeks to limit disruption given existing contracts. Bahia and Flamengo voted against the change.

Clubs also backed new registration rules to promote youth development. From next year squads may list 50 players for the Brasileirão, at least 20 aged 23 or under, moving to 25 and 25 by 2030.

CBF analysis highlights a league-average age of 28.5, higher than Spain on 27, France 26 and Italy 26.1, which it links to lower performance levels.

The federation warns opportunities for young Brazilians are dwindling, largely due to experienced imports preferred over prospects. It says the trend accelerated after 2023, when the foreigner cap rose to seven and overseas players’ minutes surpassed those of youngsters.
