Brazil’s Série A and Série B clubs voted in Rio on Monday to cut the number of foreign players permitted per match from 2027. According to L'Équipe, the reforms are intended to open more opportunities for homegrown talent.

The current limit of nine foreign players named on a teamsheet will drop to eight, then to five in 2030. The reduction will be phased to avoid clashing with existing contracts.

The move seeks to reverse a trend in which domestically trained youngsters have been used less in recent seasons.

Bahia and Flamengo were the only clubs to oppose the decision.

Registration rules were also changed, with clubs allowed to list 50 players for the league, of whom at least 20 must be aged 23 or under, rising to 25 by 2030.
