Breel Embolo salvaged a late point as Rennes drew 1-1 with Le Havre on Sunday, having spent much of the match under Ayumu Seko’s watch.

Goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi, in for Mory Diaw on his Ligue 1 bow at 31, saved from Al-Tamari on 18 minutes and from Esteban Lepaul on 50, then denied Kader Meïté on 75. According to L'Équipe, he was composed in possession.

Le Havre went ahead when Felix Mambimbi diverted Rassoul Ndiaye’s strike past Samba on 69. Mambimbi had also tracked Valentin Rongier to restrict Rennes, before Sofiane Boufal came on on 79 and worried Samba on 83.

Embolo’s strength and lay-offs yielded little for long spells as service was scarce. He finally met a Ludovic Blas cross to head in on 86.

Lepaul’s lean run continued, with a goal ruled offside and further openings spurned on 50 and 51. Replaced on 73 by Meïté, he watched the substitute miss clear chances on 75 and 80, then see an 88-minute finish disallowed, when Embolo perhaps was not.

Seko, rated seven out of 10, read the game superbly in a back five and remained an important outlet after the break. Anthony Rouault struggled in the central role, poorly positioned on the counter for the Le Havre goal and loose with his passing.
