Lennon Miller would be a good signing for Brendan Rodgers. He has shades of Calmac about him. Could he be a longer term replacement for the Celtic captain?

Highly regarded prospect

Young Lennon Miller is a highly regarded prospect in the Scottish game, and yesterday we got a chance to see him close up and see what all the fuss is about.

Lennon like the rest of his teammates didn’t exactly impress as Celtic asserted their authority on the game, and that gulf in class was clearly evident, but in the case of young Miller you can clearly tell that he is a special talent with a big future in the game.

Shades of Callum McGregor

Dare I say it, but Miller has shades of Callum McGregor about him in the way he likes to take control in the middle of the park. He likes to take players on, isn’t afraid to have a pop at goal, and is capable of that killer pass.

Celtic like a few sides have been linked with the Scotland under 21 international, but he won’t come cheap, with Motherwell most likely looking for a big fee for his signature, and rightly so. That fee is likely to be in the £4 to £5 million range, and while that may seem high for an 18 year old, it could well prove to be a real bargain in the long run.

Celtic bought David Turnbull for £3.5m when he was a highly rated youngster and that move ultimately turned out to be only a moderate success if even that. That though should not be a factor in considering Lennon Miller as a potential Celtic signing. In his post match interview Brendan Rodgers talked up Miller’s performance, clearly he caught the eye of the Celtic manager.

Succession planning

With Callum in his early 30s we could do worse than signing young Miller with a view to him becoming our skippers long term replacement.

A move for Miller in January plus allowing him to remain at Fir Park on loan for the rest of this season would be the kind of deal that would suit all parties. Given the money involved it’s unlikely that Celtic will face competition from any other club in Scotland but the danger is that he will be targeted by Championship sides or even lower level Premier League sides who will have no problem meeting the asking price.
