Bees boss hails Dango Ouattara’s ‘serious courage’ despite crucial botched ‘Panenka’ in FA Cup shootout against West Ham
Keith Andrews has said that he despises the culture around penalties after Dango Ouattara failed with a ‘Panenka’ attempt during Brentford’s shootout defeat by West Ham in the FA Cup.
Ouattara stepped up second for the Bees on Monday night after a thrilling 2-2 draw at the London Stadium and saw his tame chipped effort easily saved by Alphonse Areola as West Ham progressed into the quarter-finals.
Jarrod Bowen and Igor Thiago had both scored twice to take the tie all the way to spot-kicks, before Ouattara’s miss handed the Hammers a 5-3 victory in the shootout.
Andrews said that he was proud of his side’s performance and leapt to the defence of Ouattara, suggesting that for too long players had been “ridiculed” and “persecuted” for missing penalties.

"No, I’m not annoyed at all," the Brentford boss said of Ouattara’s penalty.
"I think the easiest thing for a footballer to do is not take a penalty. It takes unbelievable courage on a stage like that to take a penalty.
"It’s probably the first time I’ve ever spoken about penalty kicks and people that miss them.
"I despise the culture around players that have missed penalty kicks – I think you know the ones I’m talking about, national heroes that have done it, ridiculed, persecuted. I think it’s disgusting."
West Ham will now meet Leeds at home in the quarter-finals after Konstantinos Mavropanos converted the decisive spot-kick.
However, despite the disappointment of exiting the FA Cup on penalties, Andrews praised Ouattara’s courage and said Brentford’s record signing would have the full support of the club.
"It takes serious courage to do that," continued Andrews. "He practises that technique a lot, if it goes in everyone’s raving about him.
"Dango will get the absolute support he needs from myself and everybody attached to it.”
