Brentford are set to sign Fiorentina right-back Michael Kayode, paving the way for Mads Roerslev to leave.
The Bees want Kayode, 20, to join on loan for the rest of the season. A clause in the offer on the table means they have the option to buy him from Fiorentina for around £14 million in the summer once the loan ends.
Roerslev has been criticised by some sections of the Bees’ fanbase this season but has been the first-choice right-back.
He would have stayed for the rest of the season if the Kayode deal had not come off, but Brentford and Wolfsburg are now looking to wrap up a move to send the Dane to Germany on loan for the rest of the season.
The incoming Kayode has lost his place at Fiorentina in recent months under manager Raffaele Palladino, but he is a player Brentford’s scouting department have tracked for a sustained period and they have now acted to bring him in as their first signing of the January window.
The situation at full-back has been dire for Brentford in recent weeks due to injury, but Rico Henry is now back after an absence of almost 500 days, while Standard Sport reported on Tuesday that Kristoffer Ajer is back in full training after missing six games with an ankle injury.
Aaron Hickey is out with a hamstring injury but is optimistic of a return soon.
