Brian Fariñas, the Benicarló-born midfielder, has been a standout of Barcelona’s pre-season, impressing Hansi Flick and travelling with the first team to England.

According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, he started at Benicarló Base Fútbol, moved to Villarreal, then joined Barça’s Infantil B in 2018. He has climbed La Masia and now faces his biggest opening.

Early in July, Barcelona and Girona had advanced a sale of 50 percent of his rights for 1.5 million euros. The move was close until his training form changed the picture.

Flick asked for more time to assess him, valuing his quality on the ball, awareness of space and versatility. He can start play as a pivot, operate inside and arrive from deep.

He has a close bond with Lamine Yamal, who invited him during Euro 2024 and visited Benicarló more than once as a child. They follow each other on Instagram, and Pau Cubarsí follows him too.

Frenkie de Jong’s World Cup injury, a medial collateral ligament tear in his right knee, has opened a door. Flick is considering Fariñas among the midfield options for the start of the season.

Fariñas helped Juvenil A win a 2024/25 treble, including the Youth League, then stepped up to Barça Atlètic. He became a captain and recorded five goals and seven assists in Segunda Federación.

Girona remain keen and will await Flick’s decision to keep him or let him develop at Montilivi. Deco and agent Borja García have been in talks, and his contract runs to 30 June 2028.
