Danny Welbeck has completed his move to Chelsea on what is believed to be a two-year deal, terms undisclosed.

He began the week with Brighton on their training trip to Vienna, then returned to England to finalise the switch to Stamford Bridge, ending almost six years with Albion. The club said in a statement that head coach Fabian Hurzeler praised his professionalism and leadership and wished him well.

Brighton signed the former England centre-forward as a free agent early in the lock-out 2020-21 season and helped him re-ignite his career.

Hurzeler accepted there was a reaction from supporters and inside the club, and that new players now have an opportunity. He noted that if the first five, six, seven games go well and young players score, the decision will be praised, while a slow start would bring criticism. His priority is daily work with the group, helping them improve, and he believes they can step up to become top players.

Confirmation had initially been expected on Friday, but Chelsea instead made headlines for breaches related to payments to agents. They were fined £10 million and issued with a registration ban, suspended for two transfer windows.
