Brighton are ready to pay over €22m to sign Eredivisie golden boot winner Alireza Jahanbakhsh.

The 24-year-old striker scored 21 goals in the Dutch top flight last season as he helped AZ Alkmaar to a third place finish. Now, according to Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad, he is on the verge of a move to Brighton.

Jahanbakhsh would become the Seagulls’ record signing, surpassing the €17m fee they paid for on Dutch striker Jürgen Locadia in January.

An Iran international, Jahanbakhsh featured in all three of his country’s games at the World Cup this summer, and has also been linked with a move to Leicester City. However, it seems Brighton are the frontrunners as they look to build on last season’s survival.

Chris Hughton’s side have already made six first team additions so far this summer. Only two teams scored fewer than their 34 Premier League goals in 2017/18, so the need for a goalscorer is obvious.

AZ’s previous record sale was Vincent Janssen, who failed to perform for Tottenham following his move to the Premier League in 2016.
