Bjorn Hamberg has secured his first senior head coach role, leaving Albion’s under-18s to take charge of IF Elfsborg in Sweden.

Assistant coaches Steve Menzies and Tomer Hemed will lead the under-18s on an interim basis, starting with next Tuesday’s FA Youth Cup tie against Sunderland. Albion sporting director Jason Ayto said the club support his move into senior management and wished his family well.

Hamberg was part of Graham Potter’s coaching staff with the Seagulls, then returned to lead the under-18s ahead of this season. He has also worked with the Swedish national squad this term and has long viewed himself as a head coach.

Elfsborg have completed pre-season friendlies and are set for three cup games before the league campaign begins in early April.

They finished eighth last season and face Gothenburg in their Allsvenskan opener on six April.
