Leeds United head to the south coast off the back of an unbeaten start to the season, looking to end a wretched record at the Amex Stadium when they take on Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday. 

Daniel Farke’s side have taken four points from their opening two Premier League matches, while Fabian Hurzeler’s Brighton sit on three points after contrasting results at either end of the season so far.

The two sides met on the penultimate weekend of last season, when a 96th-minute Dominic Calvert-Lewin goal secured Leeds a 1-0 win at Elland Road. Brighton, though, have the upper hand historically on home soil, unbeaten in their last ten home league meetings with the Whites and having kept eight consecutive clean sheets against them at the Amex. 

Leeds, remarkably, have played more matches without winning at this ground than any other in their history. Both clubs strengthened on deadline day, with Brighton adding Chema Andres and Femi Azeez, and Leeds bringing in Melvin Bard and Jean-Matteo Bahoya.

Team news

Brighton

Jack Hinshelwood, Yankuba Minteh, Kaoru Mitoma, Mats Wieffer, Stefanos Tzimas and Evan Ferguson are all sidelined through injury, with Wieffer not expected back until after next month’s international break. Georginio Rutter and Yasin Ayari are doubts after missing last weekend’s defeat at Chelsea. Costinha could make his first start at right-back in Wieffer’s absence, and new signings Chema Andres and Femi Azeez are both in contention to feature in some capacity.

Leeds United

Joe Rodon will miss eight to ten weeks with what Daniel Farke described as a “serious hamstring injury,” while Mateo Joseph also remains out with a knee problem. Ilia Gruev has returned to training and could be involved in some capacity, and new arrivals Melvin Bard and Jean-Matteo Bahoya are both available, having joined on deadline day. Nico Elvedi is set to deputise for Rodon and could earn his first Premier League start.

Brighton

Brighton’s season has swung between extremes: a 4-0 opening-day thrashing of Aston Villa followed by a 4-3 defeat at Chelsea, making them only the second English top-flight side since 1950 to score four in their opener and then concede four in their next game. Hurzeler’s side have also dominated possession in both matches, and a third successive 70%-plus display would set a new record for the start of a Premier League campaign.

Leeds United

Leeds remain unbeaten this season, following a 1-0 win at Nottingham Forest with a battling 1-1 draw at home to Brentford, in which Calvert-Lewin’s late leveller salvaged a point after a below-par first-half display. Farke’s side have already matched two of their away wins from the whole of last season in all competitions, a marked improvement on their travels.
