Brighton hope Carlos Baleba’s AFCON stint with Cameroon can help him recapture his best form.
“When I started this season, I wanted to show the same performances as last season. Every day I try to work hard and get back to my level. Did I put too much pressure on myself? Yes, I think so, but I think it's good. It's good for me. Now I have to get through this slightly stressful period, get back on the horse and continue working hard,” he told Sky Sports.
The midfielder linked up with Cameroon colleagues in Casablanca on Monday evening ahead of the tournament in Morocco.
He started at Liverpool on Saturday to round off a below-par first half of his club season.
There are theories he has been affected by interest from Manchester United, with speculation likely to continue in the run-up to the January window.
Cameroon open their campaign against Gabon in Agadir on Christmas Eve, then play holders Ivory Coast and Mozambique.
Hurzeler said: “We all hope that he has a really good tournament with Cameroon and that he plays well, that he gains self-confidence and that he tries to have consistency in his performances. I think it's a different style there. It's very physical and will be very demanding for his body. But hopefully he can use it in the right way and will come back stronger.”
