According to NY Times, Nehemiah Oriola is poised to sign a new Brighton & Hove Albion contract to 2029, with a club option for another year.
The 19-year-old has a year left on his current deal, which also includes an option. Brighton plan to keep him with Fabian Hurzeler’s first team rather than loan him out.
Brighton face a congested first half of the season in the Premier League, Carabao Cup and the Conference League. A two-legged tie in the play-offs round on August 20 and 27 could lead to six extra league-phase games. Hurzeler wants a deeper squad, so youngsters such as Oriola should get chances before a January review.
Oriola came through West Ham’s academy, spent three years at Manchester United, then left by mutual consent to join Brighton in 2023. He has progressed quickly with the under-21s and impressed Hurzeler, who has praised his left foot, one-v-one threat and reactions after losing the ball.
He was first named in a matchday squad for the 2-1 home win over Newcastle United last October, then made his senior debut in November in a 3-0 home victory against Leeds United. He featured in Premier League matchday squads six times last season and helped the under-21s win the Premier League 2 play-offs in May, beating Manchester United 1-0 at home in the final.
He registered eight goals and four assists in 18 Premier League 2 appearances during the regular season. Born in England, he is also eligible for Ghana or Nigeria through his parents.
