Bristol City rescued a valuable point late on in their entertaining 2-2 draw with fellow playoff hopefuls Wrexham at Ashton Gate.

The Welsh side were twice pegged back as Sinclair Armstrong cancelled out Oliver Rathbone’s opener, and Max Bird equalized in the 89th minute following an own goal from Oliver Williams.

The result means Wrexham lie seventh, level on points with Derby, while the Robins lurk a point behind them in ninth.

As it happened

The opening stages of the game were fairly cagey, with neither side really managing to break through the defensive lines in open play until Bristol City defender Neto Borges fired high and wide after a rapid counter-attack from the hosts.

The first shot on target came the way of Wrexham as Callum Doyle saw his headed effort comfortably saved by Radek Vitek.

The visitors continued to pile on the pressure and it eventually payed off when Rathbone fired the ball home into the roof of the net with ten minutes left of the first-half.

The Robins were unable to get themselves level before the break with a triple change at half-time saw Jason Knight, Armstrong and Delano Burgzorg replace Emil Riis, Mark Sykes and Sam Morsy.

Armstrong had an instant impact as he burst through The Red Dragons’ defence, following a lovely ball from Tomi Horvat, and smashed the ball across the goal and into the top corner.

Horvat was taken off after an hour of play in favour of Bird who took to the field for the first time since September following a lengthy injury.

Just ten minutes later, City midfielder Adam Randell went down injured and was replaced by Joe Williams who unfortunately turned the ball into his own net just moments later, gifting the lead back to Wrexham.

Rob Atkinson was displeased with the linesman a he felt there was an offside in the build up to the goal.

Gerhard Struber’s side didn’t allow their head to drop though as they looked for an instant equaliser, winning a string of corners and free-kicks in the attacking half.

Then up stepped Max Bird who’s right-footed volley thundered into the back of the net with the help of the crossbar, levelling the game back up in the 89th minute.

Delano Burgzorg broke through as he looked for his first City goal but went down in the area, which the referee deemed to be simulation resulting in a yellow card for the winger.

Bristol City had another huge penalty shout in the final moments as Rob Dickie seemed to be pulled down in the box following a corner.

Again, the referee waved away the claims with the game finishing 2-2.
