Former Ipswich captain Sam Morsy is closing in on a return to the Championship with Bristol City
Bristol City are looking to bolster their midfield pack this January with the signing of former Ipswich Town captain Sam Morsy.
According to Bristol Live, the Robins are in "advanced talks" with the 34-year-old, who has been a free agent since September following the cancellation of his contract at Kuwait Sporting Club.
Morsy is an EFL veteran, having made close to 500 appearances across all three divisions, winning promotions with the likes of Chesterfield in League Two, Wigan Athletic in League One and Ipswich in both the third and second tiers.
Now he's got his eyes set on a return to England, as he looks to add to a Bristol City midfield which has been struck by injuries throughout the 2025/26 campaign thus far.

Bristol Live have reported that Gerhard Struber's side are in advanced talks with Morsy, as they look to agree a deal which would see the 34-year-old join as soon as the transfer window opens.
The Egyptian midfielder made 33 appearances in the Premier League last season for Ipswich, but departed on a free transfer to Kuwait SC. After just three games there, however, he was released from his contract.
Due to his appearances throughout his short time with the Kuwait Premier League champions, Morsy has been unable to sign fresh terms with another club until the January transfer window opens. In the meantime, he's reportedly trained with Premier League side Wolves - his hometown side - to maintain fitness.
The deal between the two parties has yet to be completed, but the conversations are moving on at a quick rate, and if an agreement is made, the 34-year-old will join up permanently with the Ashton Gate-based outfit at the start of next month.
Gerhard Struber's side are just two points removed from a place in the top six as Christmas approaches, which is an impressive feat given the injury crisis he's had to navigate, especially in midfield.
Max Bird has been absent since September, while Joe Williams is yet to take to the field at all this season. Captain Jason Knight has recently gotten back up to speed after missing two months with a groin injury, but even then, he and Adam Randall are the only fit central midfielders Gerhard Struber has in his squad.
The arrival of Morsy would add some extra legs and some added quality in the engine room ahead of the second half of the campaign.

After a rather quiet summer transfer window, many are expecting Bristol City to be a bit busier in January, especially given the various injury issues they've had to navigate, too.
Spirits are high following a huge 2-0 win over a red-hot Middlesbrough side at the weekend, and news that Morsy may be on his way at the start of next month will help keep them that way.
The 34-year-old was a vital part of Kieran McKenna's side during Ipswich's promotion to the Premier League a couple of seasons ago, marshalling the midfield and chipping in with nine goal contributions throughout the campaign, too.
He's a proven leader and someone with promotion credentials almost everywhere he's played. For a Bristol City side eager to register back-to-back play-off campaigns, he'd be a more than useful option.
Should Morsy make the move to Ashton Gate, it would be a perfect way to kickstart the Robins' winter arrivals.
