According to Sky Sports, the Robins could be set for a significant investment from an unnamed businessman.

The Championship side have been up for sale for quite some time, with owner Steven Lansdown making it clear that he would cash in for the right price.

The Lansdown family have been in charge of the Bristol outfit since 1996, but he is now closing in on selling a majority of his shares in the club.

Bristol City reached the play-offs as recently as 2025, but were unable to earn promotion to the Premier League.

Michael Skubala’s side kicked-off their current campaign last Saturday with a 2-0 defeat to last year’s play-off semi-finalists Millwall.

It’s believed that Lansdown is close to an agreement with a wealthy businessman that will see him sell a significant stake in Bristol City.

It is unclear how much the 73-year-old will receive from this potential agreement, which has not yet been finalised.

However, Lansdown has reportedly invested £280 million into Bristol City during his time as owner, as he nears the 30-year anniversary of his takeover.

The Championship side have not competed in the Premier League, and their last top flight campaign came in 1980.

Skubala responded to the change in ownership, claiming that it has no impact on his management of the team.

He has shown his gratitude to the Lansdown family since becoming head coach in the summer, particularly for how they have backed him in the transfer market.

"My focus is with the team,” said Skubala.

"We have a lot of work to do.

“First thing I will say is the Lansdown family have been excellent and supportive of all the business we've done.

"Like you've seen in the window, we have been aggressive.

“As the manager, my focus is just on the grass."

Bristol City have completed nine signings so far this summer, with just two weeks remaining in the market.

The Robins have added the likes of Lorent Tolaj, Dominic Ballard, Sam Tickle and Sam Greenwood, among others.

How Bristol City fans have reacted to takeover talk

Many Bristol City supporters are attempting to figure out who the unnamed investor is, with the big clue being that they own a betting firm.

But in terms of an actual investment, supporters are hoping that they are more in line with Tony Bloom at Brighton or Matthew Benham at Brentford, rather than the Coates family at Stoke City.

Fans are excited at the prospect of a new owner taking charge at Ashton Gate, and they are looking forward to hearing more details.

Bristol City return to action on 22 August with a trip to face Birmingham City in a 12.30pm kick-off.

Change in ownership will be a massive shift for Bristol City

Lansdown has been seeking a buyer for Bristol City for a number of years, so this doesn’t come as a massive surprise.

Every change in ownership is a massive gamble on the future direction of a club at this level, and there are plenty of good and bad examples.

Bloom and Benham have both drastically improved the fortunes of their respective teams, so someone coming in with a similar background will excite fans.

But for now there are only so many details to go off of, so it’s impossible to predict what the future holds for the Robins.
