Bruno Fernandes has been named the Premier League Player of the Season following an outstanding year for Manchester United.
The Portuguese midfielder beat competition from Arsenal trio David Raya, Gabriel Magalhães and Declan Rice, as well as Erling Haaland, Antoine Semenyo, Igor Thiago and Morgan Gibbs-White.
Fernandes has played a huge role in United’s campaign, helping the club secure third place and qualification for the UEFA Champions League. In 37 league appearances, he has scored eight goals and registered 20 assists - equalling the Premier League record for most assists in a single season, previously held by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.
The United captain’s 20th assist came in the 3-2 victory over Nottingham Forest, where he set up Bryan Mbeumo to match the long-standing record. With one league match still remaining against Brighton, Fernandes could yet set a new benchmark.
This is the first time Fernandes has won the Premier League’s top individual prize and he becomes the first Manchester United player to receive the honour since Nemanja Vidic in the 2010/11 season. He also joins former United winners such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and Peter Schmeichel.
Fernandes had already collected the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year award earlier this season, underlining his influence and consistency throughout the campaign.
