Bruno Guimaraes receives message from Pep Guardiola in joke over animated Erling Haaland clash

Pep Guardiola has jokingly made reference to his actions involving a camera operator and Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes when discussing a new on-field interaction this week.

Guardiola was seen in an intense chat with Guimaraes after full-time at St. James’ Park in November as Eddie Howe earned his first Premier League victory over Pep Guardiola courtesy of a Harvey Barnes brace either side of Ruben Dias’ leveller.

Tensions were high on the pitch and sidelines on the night, owing somewhat to the controversial nature of Newcastle’s winner, with Manchester City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma claiming he had been held and fouled by Barnes in the buildup to his winner following a corner situation.

Since his arrival to England in 2016, Guardiola has frequently given on-pitch footballing lessons to his own as well as opposition players at full-time – underpinning his passion for perfection in football and confirming his status as a student of the game.

Manchester City followed their 2-1 defeat at St.James’ Park with a disappointing 2-0 loss at home to Bayer Leverkusen in the UEFA Champions League last week – and the Blues nearly dropped points for the third time in a week against Leeds United on Saturday.

Leeds entered the interval with a two-goal deficit but a series of inspired substitutions from Daniel Farke and a resilience shown by the Yorkshire outfit saw them pull two goals back and threaten Manchester City to a frustrating 2-2 draw.

However, Phil Foden’s stoppage-time winner rescued Manchester City and ensured his side returned to winning ways a day before Arsenal dropped points against Chelsea, with City thereby moving to five points within the league leaders.

Speaking in a recent press conference, Guardiola was quizzed on his animated post-match chat with Erling Haaland following City’s dramatic 3-2 win over Leeds United at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

“I missed Bruno Guimaraes today and the camera (operator) and that’s why I went with Erling (Haaland). I don’t know what I had to do,” Guardiola said, in a cheeky reference to his widely-documented interactions after defeat at St James’ Park in November.

“So, I love to talk with the players, opponents, referees and so on after the game. I love it. In that moment, I want everyone active. I want to shout at them all the time.

“I shout at Erling, I shout at (Rayan) Cherki, I shout at Omar Marmoush, I shout at Phil (Foden) – do you know why? Because I want win the game! And if they sleep, I will be in trouble. So that’s why I shout at them, yeah. Ten seasons here, they know me completely well.”

City need to keep it together if they are to challenge Arsenal thick and thin in the Premier League title race and nothing less than three points will do for the Blues against Fulham in west London on Tuesday evening.
