Which league is currently the strongest in the world? This question has been a topic of debate for years. Vincent Kompany has now taken a clear stance on the matter. The FC Bayern coach sees the Premier League at the top due to its economic strength—but for him, the Bundesliga follows right behind it.

Ahead of FC Bayern’s friendly against Aston Villa, Vincent Kompany was asked about the comparison between the Bundesliga and the English Premier League. The Belgian, who played in England for many years himself, offered a matter-of-fact assessment of the current balance of power.

Kompany: Money determines quality

For the Bayern coach, a league’s strength is primarily linked to its financial resources.

“Many of these comparisons between leagues are quite simple: you have to look at the financial resources. The Premier League has the most financial resources, which is why it’s the best league in the world,” Kompany explained.

For years, the enormous TV revenues have enabled English clubs to regularly sign the most sought-after players on the transfer market and pay high transfer fees. As a result, the Bayern coach believes the Premier League currently boasts the highest level of quality.

The Bundesliga impresses with its own strengths

Nevertheless, Kompany sees the Bundesliga as a close second to the Premier League. “Personally, I’d say the Bundesliga ranks second. Because when you look at talent, the Premier League has the most of it—since you can buy a lot of talent with a lot of money.”

At the same time, the Belgian emphasized that the Bundesliga sets global standards in other areas.

“But the Bundesliga has other strengths: a strong fan culture and very talented players coming up through the ranks at every club. The Premier League may currently be in the lead, but the Bundesliga is the second-best league; it’s very exciting, with many good players and good teams.”

The Bayern coach’s comments can also be seen as a compliment to German soccer. Despite having significantly fewer financial resources than the Premier League, Kompany continues to view the Bundesliga as the closest challenger to England’s top league. With its youth development programs, the extraordinary stadium atmosphere, and the high level of play, he believes it remains one of the best leagues in the world.
