Bundesliga veteran and Germany international Philipp Max (32) retires from football | OneFootball

Philipp Max has retired from professional football at 32, ending a career of 180 Bundesliga appearances and three Germany caps, plus spells in the Netherlands, Greece and Japan. The player said in an Instagram post on Sunday that he had decided to hang up his boots.

Max broke through at Schalke in 2013/14 before establishing himself at Augsburg. He played 145 Bundesliga games for FCA and was known as an attack-minded left-back, effective with crosses and set pieces.

He left for PSV Eindhoven in 2020, and that move aligned with his international peak. He debuted for Germany in November 2020, assisting in a 1-0 friendly win over the Czech Republic, and finished the year with three caps.

Max spent more than two seasons with PSV, making 106 Eredivisie appearances as the club finished runners-up three times. Eintracht Frankfurt brought him back in January 2023, and he settled quickly under Oliver Glasner, helped by his understanding with Mario Götze.

Glasner viewed him as a long-term left wing-back and early displays supported that. He thrived in Frankfurt’s system, taking set pieces and delivering from deep, before competition intensified under Dino Toppmöller as Niels Nkounkou pressed his claim.

Max left the Bundesliga in summer 2024 for Panathinaikos, playing nine league matches and two in the UEFA Conference League. Gamba Osaka signed him in March this year, but the deal ended seven weeks later, with his physical condition given as the reason. He stayed unattached thereafter.
